Blake Lively’s always been super fit, but gearing up for her role in The Shallows (of which she spends the majority in a bikini), she followed a strict, clean diet of fresh ingredients, protein, and—gasp!—carbs, which her nutritionist, Steve Macari explains is important for post-workout recovery.

Lively still got to indulge, of course, while prepping for the film and turned to gluten-free pizza and pasta to satiate her cravings. But (in addition to gluten) there was one surprising food group she completely stayed away from: soy.

In a telephone interview with Aussie-based The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Lively dove a bit deeper into her strict food plan.

“I did no gluten and no soy,” she explains. “Once you remove soy, you realize you’re eating no processed foods. So that’s basically what I did. No processed foods and then working out.”

No soy seems like it’d be a pretty easy feat, but it’s actually a hidden ingredient in several foods. Explains Lively, “[It] seems like, Oh, that’s really easy to cut that out, but then you realize there’s soy in everything. Like, everything you eat, there is soy in it. Even if it’s healthy, Whole Foods, organic stuff, there’s always soy in it.”
