Beautician Magician: 10 Magic Makeup Tricks You Need to Know
Leombruno Bodi for VOGUE

Witnessing a makeup artist like Lauren Andersen contour, highlight, and define is a bit like watching a magician perform. Lines, bags, and spots that were once there suddenly vanish and are replaced by smooth skin, defined cheekbones, and wide-awake eyes. It’s enough to make us want to jump to our feet and give a round of awestruck applause.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t have a makeup artist to work her magic on us on a daily basis. Fortunately, we here at Byrdie have interviewed quite a few of them and picked up some of their handiest tricks along the way. Today, we’re sharing 10 magical makeup tricks that will do everything from slim your nose to grow your lashes to new lengths—no top hat or bunny required.

#1: Make Your Lip Color Pop

Smooth a silky foundation, like Tom Ford’s Traceless Foundation ($78), on your lips before applying lipstick to make the color more vibrant.

    #2: DIY Lash Serum

Nervous about the ingredients in eyelash growth serums? Use castor oil instead—it’s full of omega 7 fatty acids, vitamin E, and proteins, which help nurture and promote hair growth. Apply with a clean spooly every night and watch your lashes grow to new lengths.

    #3: Get a Dewy Complexion

Give yourself a dewy glow by applying another layer of your favorite moisturizer after foundation.

    #4: Thicken Your Lashes

Dust your lashes with a loose powder, like Shiseido’s Translucent Loose Powder ($35), before applying mascara for a thicker, more voluminous fringe.

    #5: Plump Your Pout

After swiping on lipstick, dab a bit of shimmery, peach eyeshadow, like Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow ($18) in Freelove, in the center of your top and bottom lips to give the illusion of a plumper pout.

    #6: The Liquid Liner Trick

If using liquid liner makes you nervous, try this trick: simply apply pencil liner first, then go over it with liquid. This will give you an inky, smudge-free finish without fear of a shaky line.

    #7: Make Your Eyeshadow Brighter

Make any eyeshadow brighter and more vibrant by dusting a matte, white eyeshadow, like Make Up For Ever Eyeshadow ($21) in White, on lids first.

    #8: Fake a Nose Job

Make your nose look slimmer in just three steps. First, take a highlighter like Chella’s Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil ($18) and apply it down your bridge. Then, sweep a matte bronzer, like Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer ($29), down both sides of your nose with a round eyeshadow brush. Blend everything together and voila—your nose will instantly look slimmer and more defined.

    #9: Perm Your Lashes

Give your eyelash curler a blast with your hairdryer before using it—this will give a “perming” effect to your eyelashes and help them stay curlier, longer.

    #10: Paint Within the Lines

Never get nail polish on your skin again! Before polishing your digits, apply a small amount of Vaseline to the skin outside the edge of your nails with a Q-tip. Then, just paint away—the Vaseline will prevent any nail polish from going where it isn’t supposed to.
