The process of applying application is extremely enjoyable for us. We are beauty editors, after all. And we have a feeling that our fellow beauty-loving friends (like you, dear Byrdie readers!) also find makeup application cathartic. However, there are definitely some days when we're in a rush and flying out the door with one shoe on, wishing that maybe, just maybe we could cut some corners in our routine. That's not to say we're willing to settle for looking less than our best; we'd just like to know how to apply our usual amount of makeup in less time. That's not asking for too much, right?
Thankfully, 2015 has been the year of the beauty hack. We've learned so many amazing tips that have saved us time, money, and a bit of our sanity, as well. We've also discovered a number of hacks that have completely transformed makeup as we know it, improving our regular product performance tenfold. Since we're willing to bet we're not alone in this love for routine enhancers, we thought we'd share our top finds of the year with you.

The last thing we want after taking the time to perfectly line and fill in our lips with a bold crimson hue is to have it feather and smudge. Thankfully, our lives as we know it changed when we learned this genius tip from makeup artist Kelly Hanna Thompson: Use eyebrow wax. It acts as an incredible barrier, so feathering doesn't stand a chance.
In an effort to have Olivia Culpo brows, we faithfully shape, brush, powder, and (if a stray hair is in sight) tweeze our own on the regular. It's no easy feat keeping up with the Joneses of the brow world. So when we notice sparse areas of our brows that just won't fill in, we become discouraged. However, when a makeup artist from the Violet Grey beauty boutique told us that all we need to fix this issue is concealer, our hearts skipped a beat. Truly, by patting concealer onto those areas that just won't grab onto your brow product, you create a stronger base that will attract any gel, powder, or pomade like a magnet.
We've tried to break up with our mascara clumps time and time again, but they just keep coming back. While using a comb can be a bit too damaging, we searched high and low for a hack that would banish them for good. Turns out this hack comes in the form of crealine, a makeup remover that, when pressed gently on your lashes with a cotton pad, gently breaks up the clumps while leaving the rest of your mascara intact.
If you've ever fallen victim to dry skin (and if you haven't, we need to talk), then you know how much of a pain it is trying to put foundation on when you have a flaky base. Once you apply your makeup, it's too late to try and moisturize, right? Wrong! Edward Cruz shared with us his genius tip for removing flakes in an instant: "Using a Beautyblender Sponge ($20), gently press a minimal amount of Sonia Kashuk's Radiant Boost Restorative Facial Oil ($15) onto dry areas. Your foundation will bond with the dry, flaky skin, unveiling a smooth and fresh finish.” Brilliant!
We love a good winged liner but don't always have the steady hand to apply it (or the patience, TBH). Instead of trying to get that razor-sharp cat eye in one fell swoop, apply your liner as your normally would, then trace over it with liquid liner to get the same effect without the shaky line!
We may not be masters at baking goodies in the kitchen, but baking our faces? Consider us pros. No, we're not talking about going to the tanning bed, but rather placing concealer under our eyes, then letting loose setting powder "bake" for five minutes before brushing it off. The result? Bright, Instagram-perfect under-eyes.
If you're a woman of color and can't find a decent blush shade with visible color payoff, we hear you. That's why we flipped when we heard this perfect hack for just that: use lipstick. It sounds so simple but works beautifully against dark skin tones. Just pat the color onto your cheeks or blend out with a sponge after applying straight from the tube.
You may not have heard of primer water, but we think you'll want to be acquainted with it after reading the following tip: Spray a bit of Smashbox's Photo Finish Primer Water onto your foundation brush before applying your foundation, and watch as your foundation doesn't budge all day long. Sounds like magic in a bottle to us.
Instead of overlining your lips and getting fillers, you can fake a fuller pout by contouring with powder. That's right—a shimmery powder placed on the bottom lip then blotted onto the top lip will create the illusion of a lusher pout.
