4 Foods You Should Put On Your Face Immediately

We’ve noticed something strange happening over the past few weeks—items from our kitchen pantry have somehow migrated to our bathroom counters. First, it was that jar of coconut oil (it’s officially replaced our shaving cream). Then, it was the coffee grinds we used to make that cellulite-busting leg scrub. Now, in honor of Earth Day, we’re getting our faces into the food game too.

“Facials and masks can be great for cleaning your skin and removing dead cells, but some are full of harsh chemicals and most aren’t the most eco-friendly,” NYC dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler says. The solution? Try an all-natural alternative instead. We asked Wechsler to share her favorite skin-boosting foods to smooth, plump, exfoliate, refresh, and brighten your complexion. We like to see it as the grown-up way to play with our food—all in the name of good skin, of course.

    2 tablespoons of honey
    2 teaspoons of whole milk

    1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.
    2. Warm up the mixture in your microwave for a few seconds.
    3. Smooth over your face using your fingertips.
    4. Wait for 10 minutes.
    5. Rinse off with warm water.

    “This is a great mask to turn back time, or at least look as though you did!” Wechsler says. She says the honey acts as a natural humectant, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and promoting a more youthful appearance. The lactic acid, proteins, fat, amino acids, and vitamins A and D found in milk help remove dead skin cells and calm dry, irritated skin.

    1 avocado
    1 tablespoon of honey

    1. Mash one avocado in a bowl.
    2. Add in one tablespoon of honey and mix together.
    3. Apply the mixture to your face.
    4. Wait for 15 minutes.
    5. Rinse off with warm water.

    Wechsler says the healthy fats in avocados that make them so good for you to eat also have great skin benefits when applied topically. “Avocados are loaded with 25 essentials vitamins and nutrients, and can rejuvenate and refresh even the most tired-looking skin!” she says. They’re a great source of vitamin A, D and E—all of which help maintain skin health and elasticity. Plus, their abundance of natural fatty acids will sooth and moisturize your skin.

    2 tablespoons of old-fashioned oats
    1 tablespoon of honey
    1 tablespoon of hot water

    1. Grind the oats down with a mortar and pestle, or use a food processor.
    2. Add honey and hot water, stir until the mixture becomes a paste.
    3. Apply the paste to your face and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes.
    4. Gently rinse off with warm water and a washcloth.

    Note: Weschler explains that the mask will harden over time, forcing you to scrub a bit more to remove it. This will only further the exfoliating benefits!

    “Oatmeal face masks are one of my favorites,” Wechsler says. Oats contain polysaccharides, which leave a protective film on your skin and prevent dryness. Plus, they’re filled with natural cleansers called saponins that help remove dirt and oil from your pores. The result? A clean, bright, radiant complexion.
