    The sisters choose their beauty collaborators based on their brilliant creative teams and innovative products. "They allow us to achieve all of our beauty ideas," said the Mulleavys. "We work with Odile Gilbert [for Kerastase] on the hair concepts for our shows and on special projects like the Don Giovanni opera. She creates with such artistry and beauty and she constantly inspires us."

    Though they usually work with James Karliardos on their shows--"He is really incredibly talented and approaches makeup in a painterly manner that is delicate, yet complex."--the Mulleavys welcomed Uzo on set.

    "Kate and Laura wanted the models to look like they went to bed with their makeup on, woke up the next morning, and looked amazing," Uzo said. So she used Nars' Single Eyeshadow ($24) in Bengali. "It's a really rich mahogany matte eye shadow that is sometimes too pigmented for the average woman," she says. "So I would recommend Nars' Duo Eyeshadow ($34) in Cordura, which has the same depth and rich mahogany shade, but with a little shimmer, so it's easier to blend."

    "The look we were going for was glamorous, soft, and beautiful hair that was set--but the next day," said Jeffrey Jagling, Kerastase's National Artist. "So it's fuzzy, yet still elegant and beautiful, with a weathered, worn look to it. 

    "Kate and Laura wanted that look of day or two-day-old hair when the oils have set in," Jagling said. So he used Kerastase's Nectar Thermique ($41) to prep the wet hair and then blew it out with a round brush. After drying, he worked in a "generous amount" of Kerastase's Elixir Ultime ($54) "to make the hair look dewy. "

    "We are going back to the '90s with the lip look," Uzo said. Instead of a wine-colored lip, she used Nars' Sheer Lipstick ($24) in Vendanges "to get a beautiful mahogany brown with an undertone of pink."

    "One of the coolest aspects of working with Kerastase and Nars is getting to experiment with new products during the shows and then integrating the ideas and looks into our everyday beauty routines," said the Mulleavys. "Right now we love Kerastase Resistance Double Force Hairspray ($39) and Nars Blush ($28) in Gaiety!"

With clothes as beautiful as Rodarte's, designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy could easily leave the hair and makeup on their runways to chance. Instead, the sisters work with Kerastase and Nars to produce one ethereal look after another. So when Grey magazine chose to honor the designers with an editorial spanning their seven years in business, the Mulleavys turned again to their trusted hair and makeup collaborators.
