Lauren Bacall

We're Channeling Lauren Bacall in the Month's Beauty Icon!
Lauren Bacall
The last time this many actresses donned side-parted, softly waved curls on the red carpet, Casablanca was the number one film and Marilyn Monroe was on her first of three husbands. Apparently the world is having a Lauren Bacall moment, as everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Rachel Weisz is channeling her look with fluffy waves and arched brows. Though Bacall and Monroe played brilliantly off each other in 1953's How to Marry a Millionaire, the Bronx-born actress was in many ways the sexpot's opposite, thanks to her deep, husky voice, her film noir roles, and her chocolate brown locks. We might not have a red carpet to walk, but we're still going to steal her look.Soft curls, we mentioned, are key. Unlike in the '40s, there are dozens of products and tools you can use to score those universally flattering side waves. Lorenzo Martin, who waved Jennifer Lopez's hair at the Golden Globes, uses L'Oreal Paris' Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Ultimate Strength Solution ($7) to prep wet hair for this style. You'll want to use the best blow-dryer you can for the ultimate shine, like T3's Veloce Hair Dryer($99), before using a one-inch ceramic curling iron to curl one-inch sections of hair. Pin each curl to your head with a bobby pin until all of your hair is curled. Spritz hairspray, like Sebastian's Shaper Plus Hairspray ($20), across the curls and let them sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Take out the pins and brush through the curls with a paddle brush like Sonia Kashuk's Hair Brush ($16), pulling your hair in whichever direction you'd like your side part. Finish with Oribe's Shine Spray ($37).

In the '40s, Bacall, whose acting career kicked off when Howard Hawks' wife (the director who'd go on to cast Bacall in The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not) spotted her porcelain complexion in Vogue. Revlon's Colorstay Whipped Crème Makeup ($14) will give you a matte finish; set it with Sunday Riley's Soft Focus Finishing Press Powder ($40) before brushing Lorac's Pro Powder Cheek Stain ($20) in Coral Crush along your cheekbones. Are anyone's eyebrows as perfectly arched as Bacall's? If you're not already using a growth serum, add Prevage's Lash & Brow Enchancing Serum ($98) to your arsenal. Supplement any sparse areas with Laura Mercier's super soft Triangular Brow Pencil ($20) and raise one arch before asking, "You know how to whistle, don't you?"

Despite the many images of Bacall balancing a cigarette between her lips, we've never seen one in which her lipstick is anything but expertly applied. Whether you try the sassy red orange pictured above or something darker, be precise with a matching lip liner. Try M.A.C.'s Lip Pencil ($15) in Lasting Sensation before painting on L'Oreal's Colour Riche Lipstick ($9) in British Red 350 with a lipstick brush. Pat a bit of that Sunday Riley powder on top, blot, and add one more coat of lipstick. Cigarette not required, but your own Humphrey Bogart, however, is highly recommended.
