These '90s Trends Look Anything But Dated

Hallie Gould

Trends come and go, as they say. But it seems there are some that come, go, and then return again with a fresh, modern twist. While we may not be interested in pencil-thin brows and butteryfly clips at this moment, there are tried-and-true beauty looks that have stood the test of time—from the '90s all the way to present-day 2016.

We have yet to get over the brown lip (some may say we have Kylie Jenner to thank for that, but we can allow accolade to many that came before her), we still relish letting our roots grow in, and even painting on punky pink highlights has come back stronger than ever. So, without further ado, we've illustrated the best of each trend back to back (or, head to head in this case) to show how not outdated our everlasting love for the grunge-filled decade really is. Plus, we've included the products you need to re-create the look.

Matte-Brown Lips

Get the look: Apply Maybelline's Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast ($5) along your lip line and all over the your lip. Then slick on Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Thrill ($7).

Grown-In Roots

Get the look: Wash with a sulfate-free, color-protecting shampoo (we love Shu Uemura's Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Shampoo, $48) to nourish the rest of your hair—and let those roots grow.

Dark Berry Lipstick

Get the look: Apply MAC's Lipstick in Media ($17) for a dark, moody lip and lots of '90s vibes.

Candy-Pink Hair

Get the look: Channel Gwen Stefani circa 1999 with Manic Panic's Amplified Vegan Hair Dye in Hot Pink ($14), and chop your hair into a pixie for a Nicole Richie-inspired twist.

The Layered Shag

Get the look: Mix in a dollop of Ouai's Soft Mousse ($28) on towel-dried hair for extra volume and piece-y texture.
