5 Hair Products and Tools Every Woman Should Own
"I think it’s really important that every woman has a solid foundation for her hair, a great shampoo and conditioner that not only supports how you style your hair, but aids in its overall health,” Atkin says. As the brand’s spokesperson, Atkin favors Clear’s Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy ($5). “It nourishes your hair at the scalp, which I feel is often neglected, but the most important thing for strong, healthy hair.”
Atkin loves a supplement! “Viviscal ($28), Bio-Sil ($34), and fish oil supplements help nourish and invigorate new hair growth from the inside out,” she says.
If you’re only going to buy one product, make it hairspray says Atkin. “Every girl, no matter what hair type or texture needs a great hairspray.” Her favorites include Oribe’s Superfine Hairspay ($29) since it really does live up to its name—you can even brush through it! (L’Oreal’s Elnett ($13) is another stylist favorite.)

But if you’re going to buy a second product, make it dry shampoo. “It absorbs oil at the root, can extend a blowout or style for a day or two, and add texture and even movement to your hair,” Atkin says. You’ll find Serge Normant’s Meta Revive Dry Shampoo ($25) in her kit, both because it works and because of its amazing scent. We’re also fans of Klorane’s Gentle Dry Shampoo ($18) and Bumble and bumble’s new Pret-a-Powder ($26).
This month, we’re turning to celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin for all of your styling questions. She’s the woman responsible for some of the world’s most versatile tresses—Kim and Khloe Kardashian’s, Katy Perry’s, and Jessica Alba’s, to name a few—and our go-to girl for anything hair related. Send your questions her way at AskAnArtist@Byrdie.com!
