8 Halloween Makeup Tutorials From 2016 Pop Culture Moments
It's awkward to walk into a Halloween party in a costume the other attendees don't recognize. Believe me, I know. Last year I was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. While admittedly you can do whatever you want, but it's fun to dress up and revel in how funny/clever/scary your idea turned out. And it's even more fun to pretend you're a celebrity for a night.
So this year we're going for a 2016 pop culture reference. If you'd like to do the same, see below for our list and faves and easy tutorial on how to get them right. From Kim Kardashian West sans makeup at Paris Fashion Week to that time Taylor Swift went punk for a few weeks, we have everything you're looking for and then some.
Beyoncé in the "Hold Up" Video
There was perhaps no greater pop culture moment than the day Beyoncé dropped Lemonade. More a full-blown phenomenon than just an album, the record spawned Internet memes, fodder, rumors, activism, and think pieces. But, more than anything, it had us all singing, "What's worse, lookin' jealous or crazy, jealous or crazy?" over and over. Bey swung that bat into a glass window, a fire hydrant, and, of course, our hearts.
Soon after he dropped a new album and celebrated his 69th birthday, David Bowie passed away, and the world has been heartsick ever since. It has, however, given us even more of a reason to pay homage to the best the music industry has ever seen. His incredible costumes, makeup, and hairdos opened up a dialogue about androgyny and gender fluidity at a time when it was far less acceptable to do so—at least in the mainstream. Here's to you, Bowie.
Makeup–Free Kim Kardashian West
We can't get through a single conversation regarding pop culture without talking about Kim Kardashian West. When she showed up at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week, the world took notice. Usually pristinely made up, the reality star completely shocked us with her pared down (absolutely stunning) face. Her longtime makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, shared the products they used that day: "We said, if we're gonna go for it, let's really go for it,” Dedivanovic shares. “I applied the Tatcha Supple Moisture Rich Silk Cream ($150) to give her skin a nice glow, Glossier Balm Dotcom ($12), and we curled the lashes with a Surratt Relevée Lash Curler ($30). That was it—I loved the feel of it." And if you're going for practically no effort this Halloween, this is perfect costume for you.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is perhaps one of the most requested Halloween tutorials. Dressing up like the sexy supervillain for a night is the easiest way to live out your badass fantasies without actually having to swing a bat around and date the Joker.
Teyana Taylor in Kanye West's "Fade" Video
Kanye West debuted a new video for The Life of Pablo track "Fade" at the VMAs—an award show that's infamous for happenings that will forever remain in the pop culture zeitgeist. Think Britney Spears's kiss with Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke's performance, and, of course, when West stole the mic from Taylor Swift to exclaim, "I'ma let you finish, but…" In the video, We watched Teyana Taylor, a 25-year-old singer and actress, groove around in a Flash Dance–inspired dance routine with glossy curls and gleaming skin.

U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team
We were so into the Final Five ladies showing off their individuality with their makeup looks during the Olympic games in Rio. Though they took some (ridiculous, misogynistic, uninformed) flack for it during a segment on Fox News, we couldn't be more behind their sparkly eye shadows and bordeaux lipsticks. To emulate some of America's most badass women, grab four friends and apply your favorite products.
Taylor Swift's Punk Phase
Taylor Swift has kept us interested in her life and music because they've never been mutually exclusive. We've watched her pose on red carpets with her squad, tour Italy with a new beau, and write a song for her former S.O. We've also tried desperately to decode her music, looking for clues as to who each character in her songs might signify in her real life. There was "Bad Blood," a song that is rumored to be about Katy Perry, and a bunch more that are attributed to her relationship with Harry Styles. The thing that caught my attention this year, though, was her foray into dark lipsticks, bleach-blond hair, and plaid ensembles. Either way, whether you're a fan or not, she's good at keeping us waiting with bated breath for her next move.
Golden Goddess Snapchat filter
Who doesn't want to look like a golden goddess? It's the glittery Snapchat filter that took us all by storm—somehow it makes you look incredible, whether you have a full face of makeup on or you're sitting on your couch enjoying takeout and watching Bravo (more often than not, it's the latter). We got to the bottom of it all and found out the filter heavily contours, whitens your teeth, enlarges your eyes, and adds a bronzy, etherial glow. Now, you can do it IRL thanks to our special tutorial with managing editor Lindsey as the model.
